Depression in Students: Signs, Symptoms, and Behavioral Changes

Signs of Depression in Students

Did you know depression is a common finding in students? Here is how you can recognize them. Depression in students can sometimes be difficult to notice as they can hide their feelings or may have findings not commonly seen in others.

Here are four common signs of depression in students:

  1. The first one is emotional symptoms. One can have persistent feelings of emptiness and loss of interest in things they once loved. Some students may have sadness that does not go away, irritability, or feelings of hopelessness.
  2. Students with depression may struggle with cognitive work at school and at home. They may have difficulty concentrating, become indecisive, and develop negative thinking patterns.
  3. Students who once participated in all the activities might stay away from them. They might not even show any interest in going to school and can also have changes in their sleeping and eating habits.
  4. Depression can cause unexplained physical symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, or other bodily pains. These symptoms might not have a clear medical cause and can interfere with daily functioning.

If you or your loved one has these signs, talk to them and offer your help.
